APU Art Department Presents Ground Structure Exhibition
September 30, 2024 | Category Media Relations
Azusa Pacific University’s Department of Art presents Ground Structure, an exploration of space and structure by a group of prominent lens-based artists. The exhibition runs from October 15-November 8 in Duke Art Gallery, located on APU’s West Campus at 701 E. Foothill Blvd in Azusa. There will be an artist talk and opening reception on October 15 from 5-8 p.m in Duke 520.
The five artists featured include: Jason Lee, a photographer, director, actor, and professional skateboarder; John Divola, a contemporary artist and recipient of many awards and fellowships in the arts; Marcus Doyle, a photographer who has produced three books of his work; Nicholas Caesar Colon, an emerging contemporary photographer; and Raymond Molinar, a photographer, 16mm filmmaker, and professional skateboarder.
“The Art Department is incredibly excited to host the photography exhibition, Ground Structure. It brings to campus five outstanding Los Angeles photographers, notably John Divola, whose work has been in major museums around the world, and Jason Lee who is also a famous Hollywood actor,” said Stephen Childs, MFA, exhibitions director. “Each of the five photographers present unique ways of perceiving the world, beautifully capturing it through their cameras.”
Images in the exhibition range from the 1990s to today. They are united around the theme of how man made structures interact with landscapes. Capturing images that evolve from the freedom of travel and open intentionality is a practice that many artists seek to shine a light upon, depicting an undefined yet profound point of view. The photographs in this collection traverse imagery that varies from mundane to sensational.
