SGA Job Descriptions

SGA is made up of Executives and Officers. The Executive Team consists of the President, Vice President, and Directors who oversee smaller committees including Public Relations, Student Advocacy, and Events. The officers on these committees include strategists, a first-year representative, and student senators who meet once a week to discuss ways to support and engage students on campus. 

Executives

All positions with an asterisk (*) are elected positions.

Reports to: SGA Advisor

General Description

The President is elected by the members of the undergraduate student body and serves as the chief representative for APU undergraduate students to university administration. She/he is the leader of SGA and is charged with providing direction, vision, and accountability for the entire team. Through oversight of the Executive Committee, the President is the spokesperson, advocate, and visionary for SGA.

Duties of the President

  • Provide strategic direction for the entire SGA team by establishing goals and providing accountability

  • Chair weekly Executive Committee meetings to provide direction to the rest of SGA, including setting the agenda

  • Chair weekly business meetings for all members of SGA, including setting the agenda

  • Speak on behalf of the entire SGA in public forums

  • Regularly meet with and advise members of the Executive Committee

  • Ensure healthy cohesion and effectiveness of the entire SGA team by establishing a team culture and facilitating group dynamics

  • Review weekly reports from all SGA members

  • Represent the APU student body at Board of Trustees meetings and in Student Life Committee meetings

  • Meet weekly with the SGA advisor and regularly with the Dean of Students and the University President

 

General Duties

  • Up to 18 hours of work per week (varies based on meetings)

  • Attend weekly Executive Committee meetings

  • Attend all SGA Business Meetings

  • Business Meetings are held on Wednesdays from 4:30-5:30pm. It is the responsibility of the candidate to incorporate these meetings into their class schedule.

  • Attend at least two on-campus events each semester

  • Attend all MANDATORY retreats and orientations, including:

  • Summer Preparatory Work (prior to start of school year)

  • Summer Training (August)

  • Spring Training

Qualifications*

  • Must be an undergraduate member of APU as defined by the Registrar

  • Must be Junior or Senior standing during term of office

  • Must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.20 during one full semester prior to term of office, maintained throughout the term of office

  • Must be prepared to hold office both Fall and Spring semesters

  • Must proclaim and adhere to the University Statement of Faith and Student Leadership Covenant

  • Must have attended the University for at least two semesters upon beginning the position

  • May not hold any other executive on-campus leadership positions during tenure

  • May not work over 7 hours per week outside of SGA

Reports to: SGA President

General Description

The Vice President is an elected member of the Executive Committee and is the chief operations officer of SGA. She/he directly supports the President in the strategy and direction of SGA, ensures execution of SGA’s goals through operational oversight, maintains the SGA office, and serves as the chair of the Elections Committee. Should the President be unavailable to fulfill the duties of the office, the Vice President shall succeed to the Presidency.

Duties of the Vice President

  • Oversee SGA projects, internal communications, and in-office work and support members as needed

  • Keep track of SGA office hours, member attendance, and timekeeping

  • Ensure adherence to the SGA Constitution and Bylaws

  • Document all SGA Executive Committee meetings and business meetings by taking attendance and recording meeting minutes to be posted on the SGA website

  • Maintain office cleanliness, appliances, and supplies

  • Execute semi-regular job evaluations with all SGA members

  • Oversee the SGA Elections process for the following term, including serving as chair of the Elections Committee

  • Meet weekly with the SGA President and with the SGA Advisor as needed

  • Up to 15 hours of work per week

  • Serve on committees as appointed by the President

General Description

The Director of Finance is an appointed member of the Executive Committee and is responsible for managing the finances of SGA. This includes determining how the annual budget will be spent, keeping the budget up to date, filing reimbursements, and managing SGA’s credit card. The DOF is also responsible for SGA’s data collection initiatives, including overseeing the distribution and analysis of the annual SGA Survey.

Duties of the DOF

  • Responsible for setting and passing the annual budget

  • Keep records of all expenses within the association managing and updating the budget

  • Reconcile company credit cards

  • Communicate financial position of the association to team members

  • Manage the SGA Discretionary Fund, which helps to finance student events put on by clubs and organizations on campus

  • Meet with the CFO of the University as needed

  • Meet with the SGA President and SGA Advisor as needed

  • Facilitate distribution of the SGA’s Student Survey, which is administered to the whole student body to gain feedback about APU experience

General Duties

  • Up to 12 hours of work per week

  • Serve on committees as appointed by the President

  • Attend weekly Executive Committee meetings

General Description

The Director of Communications is an appointed member of the Executive Committee and chairs the Public Relations (PR) Committee. She/he is responsible for effectively facilitating external communications between SGA and the APU student body. The DOC also oversees The Table, SGA’s annual Homecoming event.

Duties of the DOC

  • Chair weekly meetings with the PR Committee

  • Determine PR goals and timeline, delegating tasks accordingly

  • Maintain the SGA website

  • Manage the SGA Instagram account

  • Devise and implement marketing strategies for SGA projects throughout the term (ie. posters, social media, website, etc.)

  • Oversee marketing for Representative and Elections recruitment

  • Chair the Table Committee and oversee event planning process

  • Meet with the SGA President and SGA Advisor as needed

  • Up to 12 hours of work per week

The Student Senator is an elected member of SGA and is responsible for the execution of SGA’s initiatives. She or he represents the APU student body by collecting student feedback, meeting with campus offices, and planning student events. There are four (4) Student Senators on the SGA team.

Duties of the Student Senator

  • Collect student feedback through in-person interactions, including tables on Cougar Walk and focus groups

  • Design creative ways to solicit student feedback

  • Analyze student feedback to determine actionable plans

  • Connect with offices across campus to communicate student feedback

  • Plan student events to enhance the student experience

  • Support other SGA members as needed

  • Complete tasks for committees as delegated by the committee chair

  • Up to 8 hours of work per week

General Description

The Strategist is responsible for implementing SGA’s communications strategy to achieve its mission of representing the APU student body. This is done through creation of graphics, social media posts, newsletters, and other forms of public communication. The Strategist serves on the Public Relations (PR) Committee under the direction of the Director of Communications. There are two (2) Strategists on the SGA team.

Duties of the Strategist

  • Effectively communicate SGA projects to the APU student body through various forms of media

  • Manage the SGA Instagram account

  • Create graphics for social media posts

  • Design posters to promote SGA events

  • Produce the monthly SGA newsletter

  • Complete PR tasks as delegated by the Director of Communications

  • Up to 8 hours of work per week

  • Serve on committees as appointed by the President

General Description

The First-Year Representative is an appointed member of SGA and is responsible for the execution of SGA’s initiatives. She or he must be a first-year student on campus, either as a freshman or transfer student, and is appointed in the fall of the academic year in which she or he will serve. The First-Year Representative represents the APU student body by collecting student feedback, meeting with campus offices, and planning student events. There is one (1) First-Year Representative on the SGA team.

Duties of the First-Year Representative

  • Collect student feedback through in-person interactions, including tables on Cougar Walk and focus groups

  • Design creative ways to solicit student feedback

  • Analyze student feedback to determine actionable plans

  • Connect with offices across campus to communicate student feedback

  • Plan student events to enhance the student experience

  • Support other SGA members as needed
