John E. Hartley, PhD

Professor Emeritus

John E. Hartley, PhD, was a Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Old Testament at Azusa Pacific Seminary (formerly the Graduate School of Theology). A founding member of the graduate school, he served at APU for 40 years. Hartley sought to teach students methods of interpretation to help them become confident interpreters of Scripture. In his research, Hartley pursued extensive work in word studies and biblical theology. He studied in Israel on five occasions, and his travels also took him to Egypt, Jordan, Italy, and Greece. In addition to being widely published, he served as a member of the Society of Biblical Literature and the Wesleyan Theological Society.
