Elijah Roth, PhD

Elijah Roth, PhD, is broadly interested in investigating student motivation and engagement in activities related to education in chemistry and science. He is particularly interested in understanding the influence of storytelling in the physical chemistry classroom as it relates to student motivation and the scaffolding of their learning. His most recent research focused on student perceptions of the affordances present in a large-enrollment, flipped-learning experience for science and engineering majors taking second-semester general chemistry. During his undergraduate career at Fresno Pacific University, Roth took the opportunity to diversify his education by minoring in Biblical and Religious Studies and he is always excited to engage in a discussion about the intersection of faith and science. In his teaching, Roth employs aspects of narrative learning and needs-supportive pedagogies. He believes that learning is best achieved when students’ basic psychological needs of relatedness, competency, and autonomy are being met by the structure of the course. Ultimately, Roth just wants to help students get as excited about chemistry as he is.
