APU Honors Veterans

APU's Office of Alumni Relations and Department of Veterans Affairs co-sponsored the 7th annual Veterans Day Luncheon on Monday, November 12. Attended by veterans who served as far back as World War II, the luncheon offered participants the opportunity to honor military service men and women, and to remember those who gave their lives for this nation.

"Let's start the countdown." Voices whooped and cheered in the dark. "Ten, nine, eight . . ." Smiles of anticipation broke out on the faces of many in the crowd. "Five, four, three, two, one!" Lights flooded the lawn. Looks of sheer delight could be seen on young and old alike. The university's Azusa Foothill Drive-in Theater marquee flashed brightly once again.

Yet more than 70 excited student leaders gathered at Soquel Ranch, just south of Yosemite in the High Sierras, on August 15 to celebrate the success of the 33rd annual Walkabout.

Azusa Pacific University’s summer sports camps came to a successful close this week, having drawn nearly 200 participants from the surrounding areas. The university offered local youth the opportunity to attend football, soccer, and softball camps held on APU's East and West campuses.

Though the deaths of Mary A. Hill, Bertha Pinkham Dixon, and Ruth Esther Smith in 1947 did not produce front-page headlines, even 60 years later their powerful legacies of lifelong Christian service stand as hallmarks. They were among the “founding mothers” of the Training School for Christian Workers (now Azusa Pacific University) and were instrumental in shaping the institution’s outward focus, alive today in the Academic Vision 2016, which identifies intentional internationalization as a major initiative for the next decade. Who were these women and how did they model intentional internationalization?

Sarah turns 15 years old today. She looks forward to a few presents, some well-wishes from her friends at school, and maybe some birthday cake. She feels officially like a young woman, hoping for and dreaming of a promising future. But she has a 1 in 10 chance of surviving to her 35 birthday. Sarah is HIV positive. And so is 36.8 percent of her nation’s population.
APU Employees Enjoy Luau, Family-Style

On Thursday, June 7, members and guests of the APU community had fun in the sun at the annual APU Employee Family Picnic, brought by the Office of Human Resources. Families were treated to popcorn and cotton candy, a dunk tank and dessert competition, and a hula show featuring members of university leadership. The event was held on the West Campus lawn from 3-7 pm.

It is a cool, overcast December afternoon as Paulo Sandoval approaches the runway. Full speed ahead he goes, before gently slowing down and heaving another javelin toward the 50-yard line. One down, another 20 to 25 more throws to go, and it is just another typical Thursday afternoon at the Azusa Pacific track.
