Macneil Family Collection
Early in the 1880s, Jonathan Sayre Slauson acquired Henry Dalton’s Rancho Azusa, organized the Azusa Land and Water Company, and developed the town of Azusa. Slauson, Hugh Livingstone Macneil (Slauson’s son-in-law), and other Macneil sons were prominent in Los Angeles legal circles and served as directors of the Azusa Foothill Citrus and other related companies.
This collection of 1,000 items tells a remarkable story of the Azusa area through a variety of documents including diaries, letters, financial accounts, receipts, deeds, wills, photographs, and genealogical data relating to the Macneil family and its patriarch, Jonathan Sayre Slauson.
Collection Highlights
The collection was the gift of Hugh L. Macneil II, James D. Macneil, and Jacqueline Smith Phelps to Azusa Pacific College in 1974. Highlights include photos of Jonathan and James Slauson.
