Mary Ann Shinnick, PhD, has a long history of critical-care nursing that turned into a teaching career at two universities. A serendipitous move into nursing simulation in 2006 changed her career to one of developing simulation programs in two other schools, and developing a program of simulation research. Her unique simulation research utilizes eye-tracking glasses to explore nursing assessment techniques and gaps in cognitive load and situation awareness. This unusual approach, seminal research studies, and active participation in two simulation societies has led to leadership roles and international recognition for simulation practice and research.
