On May 5, 2022, Azusa Pacific University’s College of the Arts (COTA) will host an Industry Spotlight at the historic Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, Calif., featuring three significant events that showcase theater, animation, and cinematic arts. Graduating students, their families and friends, along with industry leaders, will experience students’ capstone work, APU’s Studio Orchestra playing live-to-film, video games created by Games and Interactive Media students, and more.

Azusa Pacific University is located just 30 miles from Hollywood. The evening highlight will be the connection between industry VIPs and students as they prepare for their first industry jobs.

“The APU Arts Industry Showcase celebrates our rich artistic culture, which has continued to thrive throughout the lockdown, remote education, and coming back to our in-person community. All the arts throughout L.A. have experienced monumental disruption. Bringing our industry-facing arts areas together (Animation, Cinema, Design, Games, Studio Orchestra, and Theater) for a fully immersive experience underscores how the arts have thrived amid the pandemic, the learning we gained, and our vision moving forward,” said Stephen P. Johnson, DMA, COTA dean.

The Hollywood Reporter touts APU’s BFA in Acting for the Stage and Screen Industry Showcase as “Innovative.” Agent Anthony Boyer notes that schools interested in combining in-person and video performances for their showcases might look to [APU] because they have already pioneered this dual format. “The Azusa, California-based school has, over the last few years, created a web series of graduating students for reps to view while also performing live monologues at the American Film Institute in the spring. It just answers a lot of questions: It gives you a sense of [students’] personality but also a sense of their on-camera work. Those are things I would love to see schools lean into.”

Disney Animator/Director Tony Bancroft, APU’s Animation and Visual Effects program director said, “I tell my students all the time that besides the classmates sitting next to them in the animation program, being able to make outside industry relationships is key to your success. Your friends already know your worth and ability, the others need to learn about it, and that only happens by putting yourself out there and being vulnerable. This Animation-Yeah! Student Showcase does just that.”

This exclusive entertainment event begins at 6:30 p.m. with the BFA in Acting Industry Showcase, Animation-Yeah! Student Showcase, followed by the Cinematic Arts Premiere Night at 8:15 p.m. A dessert reception follows and industry connections take place throughout the evening. The event provides opportunities to experience an immersive design gallery and hands-on games experiences. For more information, visit http://apucotaindustryspotlight.com/.
