Local Student Awarded Scholarship for Ministry

June 2, 2008

AZUSA, Calif. –

Upland, Calif. resident Amanda Keys is one of three recipients to be awarded Azusa Pacific University’s Kern Center for Vocational Ministry Scholarship. A sophomore transfer student from California Polytechnic University, Pomona, Keys demonstrated a strong commitment to ministry, academic success, and service to earn this scholarship.

This scholarship allows Keys to offset tuition costs as she trains for a future career in vocational ministry. Keys volunteers at the junior high group and worship team at her home church, which inspired her to pursue a career in ministry.

“I fell in love with the idea of helping people grow in their walk with God,” said Keys.

These scholarships are the first ever awarded by the Kern Center for Vocational Ministry, established in September of 2007. The center is dedicated to developing experienced and knowledgeable individuals while assisting students in exploring their call to pastoral ministry. This program provides students with scholarship opportunities as well as pastor mentors to guide them during their college career.

“The goal of this program is to prepare students to be ministers in all walks of life,” said Steve Quatro, director of the center.

Featured in TIME magazine and ranked as one of the nation’s best by U.S.News & World Report and The Princeton Review, Azusa Pacific is a comprehensive, Christian, evangelical university, committed to God First and known for excellence in higher education. Azusa Pacific’s main campus lies just 26 miles northeast of Los Angeles in the San Gabriel Valley, while its seven Southern California regional centers bring convenience and extend quality programming.
