APU Hosts Summer Symposium in Choral Music

June 11, 2008

AZUSA, Calif. –

Renowned conductors Donald Neuen and Charlene Archbeque, DMA, join Azusa Pacific University’s School of Music for a week-long choral-music symposium in the Warren Music Center on June 24-27.

The symposium, which will focus on Handel’s Messiah and Brahm’s German Requiem, helps participants refine their knowledge and skills through intensive study in choral conducting, methods, pedagogy, and rehearsal techniques. Students take part in roundtable discussions and lecture sessions with Neuen and Archbeque, as well as several APU music faculty.

Internationally acclaimed director Neuen has been referred to as “the great choral conductor of his generation.” As a professor and director of choral activities at UCLA, Neuen heads one of the most respected graduate choral conducting programs in the U.S. He also conducts the Crystal Cathedral Choir in Garden Grove, Calif., and appears weekly on their internationally televised “Hour of Power” broadcast.

Archibeque recently retired after 35 years as professor of choral music at San Jose State University. Under her guidance, the SJSU Choraliers recorded 7 professional compact discs and completed 16 concert tours throughout Australia, Europe, and Asia. Archibeque has conducted in Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Royal Albert Hall, the Berlin Philharmonic, and Schauspiel Hall. She remains active in the field as a clinician, guest conductor, adjudicator, and teacher.

APU’s School of Music offers a Bachelor of Arts in Music with emphases in theory, applied music (performance), education, commercial music, and church music; a Bachelor of Music in Performance; and Master of Music degrees in Music Education, Conducting, and Performance.
