Featured Expert: Paul Alexander, Ph.D.

As a leading expert in Pentecostal peacemaking and a respected religious leader, Paul Alexander, Ph.D., recently returned from an international gathering of religious leaders at the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the Netherlands, where he gave a keynote address on the role of religions and religious leaders in promoting human rights.

Alexander joined Muslims, Jews, Buddhists, Hindus, Baha’i, and other Christian leaders to discuss the growing awareness of global issues and to recognize the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

“This assembly was meaningful because of the obvious commitment that so many people of so many faith communities have to education, clean water, health care, the integrity and dignity of all, and to having the tough conversations and diplomacy between peoples and nations that truly do make our world into a better community,” said Alexander, director of APU’s Doctor of Ministry Program in the School of Theology.

During his speech, Alexander addressed:

  • What can/should religious leaders do?
  • Which current human rights initiatives should they support?
  • What can religious communities do to respond?

Alexander is the founder and a coordinator of the Pentecostal Charismatic Peace Fellowship. His written works examine the theology of peacemaking and social action within Pentecostal and evangelical contexts and include: Peace, Power, and Pentecost: Nonviolence, Nationalism, and Militarism, in American Pentecostalism, and “Unified Aliens” in God’s Tabernacle: Then and Now, among others.
