I often say I was born with a suitcase in my hand. While I have lived and traveled throughout the United States and overseas, the statement goes beyond simple geography. It includes exposure to different cultures, people, ideas and ways of thinking and a willingness to put on someone else’s shoes and walk around for a while. These layered experiences have developed my curiosity and a knowing that there are always new angles, new light to be shed.
I purposely select my materials or process with this in mind. Choosing not to have full control, wanting the materials to have a voice. I want the materials to be able to push back and speak in a way that I’m not expecting, or at least cannot wholly anticipate with my developed experience and knowledge of a material or process. It is part of my invitation to mystery.
This tension in creation, giving and mysteriously receiving in return, is what draws me in. Creating for me is a place to explore, test, resolve, anchor, listen, and sometimes speak. It is often more about the process and journey, yet always producing a remnant artifact.
