Caltabiano’s artwork investigates different aspects of the wilderness fringes of Southern California suburbia. Ideas of hiddenness, mystery, placelessness and dislocation blur the lines between landscape, inward personal reflection, and narrative. His media of choice ranges from film and digital photography to mixed media involving layering of pigment transfers and paint onto surfaces as varied as birch panel to handmade Japanese papers and hemp. Caltabiano has been exhibited nationally and in several private collections ranging from framed pieces to wall-sized installations. He is by represented by Division 9 Gallery in Riverside, CA and ABBA Fine Art in Miami, FL.

For well over a decade Caltabiano owned and operated an art reproduction firm photographing and reproducing art in limited editions for clients. He specializes in high-end inkjet output. Caltabiano teaches a range of classes from the studio side of photography, to Photoshop and printing. He also teaches art history. The topic of his MFA thesis was philosophical inquiry into the ontology of a camera as interpreted through aspects of Walter Benjamin’s essay, Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction.
