AZUSA, Calif. -- Matthijs Bolsius claimed the singles and doubles titles Saturday afternoon at the NAIA ITA West Regional championships at Azusa Pacific’s Munson and Bavougian Tennis Complex. As the NAIA West Regional champion, Bolsius and doubles partner Mathias Weber will advance to the ITA National Small College Championships held Oct. 15-18, in Mobile, Ala.
Bolsius won the singles championship match against Azusa Pacific teammate Janosch Apelt, who defeated Fresno Pacific’s Xavier Smith in a 3-set quarterfinal duel Friday and earned his place in the final with a 6-0, 6-1 win over Point Loma Nazarene’s Joel Myers. Bolsius won all 4 of his singles matches in straight sets, beating Dan Westman (Biola) prior to a quarterfinal win over D.J. Jaehnig (Point Loma Nazarene). Bolsius advanced to the final with a 6-0, 6-3 semifinal victory over Tiago Hayashi (Westmont), who wasn’t able to complete his 3-set quarterfinal win over Point Loma Nazarene’s Curt Wheeler until Saturday morning after darkness suspended the match Friday evening.
In doubles, Bolsius and Weber won their first 2 matches by a combined 16-2 margin to advance to the final, where they took 3 sets to defeat Fresno Pacific’s Xavier Smith and Denny Fafek, 6-2, 6-7, 10-8.
