San Marcos needed extra innings to pull off the game one victory after sophomore third baseman Bekah Weisser tied the game with 2 outs in the bottom of the seventh with single to left that plated pinch-runner Bailey Blazek and knotted the game at 1-1.
In the top of the eighth, however, Elizabeth Bush lined a 1-out single up the middle to score Erica Coelho with what proved to be the winning run. In the bottom of the frame, the Cougars moved Erika Marmolejo to third with 1 out but San Marcos pitcher Melissa Lerno struck out Erika Navarrete and got Jen Whitten to fly out to end the game.
In the night cap, Cal State San Marcos used a pair of Cougar errors in the first inning and a second-inning sacrifice fly to score a run in each of the first 2 innings to scoot out to a 2-0 lead. That was enough for pitcher Brenna Sanberg, who retired the final 13 Cougars she faced while allowing just 3 hits and striking out 6 to pick up her fourth shutout of the season.
Azusa Pacific managed just 7 hits on the day, 5 of which were singles.
With the sweep, Cal State San Marcos improves to 26-16 overall while Azusa Pacific falls to 21-17.
