Recruiting
Becoming a Competition Squad Member
It’s never too early to begin your college search, and to find out about being part of our nationally recognized and ranked competition team!
We are currently planning two College Prep Days (CPD) for high school students who are considering college cheer. This is a day to have fun, ask questions, get to know the current team, meet those you may be cheering with in the future, and allow the coaches to get to know you! Our first CPD is scheduled for November 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. You must complete and bring with you the College Prep Day Release Form* to participate. Parents are welcome to attend, and we will follow our time with an optional lunch, campus tours, and a chance for you to sit down and talk with the coaches one-on-one.
All students interested in the competition program should complete the Competition Squad Application*. Also, please submit a photo of yourself and two recommendation letters from previous coaches or teachers. Please note that you must also apply for undergraduate admission before you will be considered.
Students may also submit a video. If you are interested in a cheerleading scholarship, we encourage you to submit a video during the fall semester, well in advance of spring tryouts, for best consideration.
When submitting a video, please include:
- All stunting abilities
- All tumbling skills (standing and running)
- Two jumps (one must be a toe-touch, and jumps to standing tumbling are encouraged)
- One sideline cheer, incorporating a variety of cheer motions
Send video, along with a completed application, recommendation letters, and photo to: Colleen Kausrud, Athletics Department, Azusa Pacific University, PO Box 7000, Azusa, CA 91702-7000.
Becoming a Spirit Squad (Dance Team) Member
All interested students, including veterans, should complete a Spirit Squad Application*. Also, please bring a photo of yourself and two letters of recommendation from previous coaches or teachers to tryouts. There will also be a $15 tryout fee. Please note that you must also apply for undergraduate admission to APU to be considered.
Students unable to attend tryouts may submit a video.
For video tryouts, please include:
- Two dances of at least four 8-counts (i.e., hip-hop; please no ballet, tap, or jazz)
- One crowd-involvement cheer in front of at least five people. We want to see you get your crowd cheering!
Send tryout video along with a completed application, recommendation letters, and photo to: Colleen Kausrud, Athletics Department, Azusa Pacific University, PO Box 7000, Azusa, CA 91702-7000.
“Joining cheer at APU gave me the opportunity to meet an amazing group of girls who soon became my family away from home.”

Plan a Visit
The best way to get to know Azusa Pacific’s squad is to attend a practice or see us in action at a competition. Please contact Coach Colleen Kausrud at ckausrud@apu.edu for more information.
“We are excited that you are considering being a part of Cougar Cheerleading! We
will push you to excellence, keeping Christ as the focus of all we do. Come ready to work
hard and be a part of our family. Go Cougars!”
