Thu., Mar. 26, 2009

AZUSA, Calif. -- After leading Azusa Pacific to an NAIA Tournament first-round win and the program’s sixth consecutive 20-win season, sophomore forward Alex Moore-Porter and junior center Kristie Hala’ufia were named NAIA All-Americans. It was the second time in the past 3 seasons that a pair of Cougar teammates were named NAIA All-American.

Moore-Porter earned second team recognition after leading Azusa Pacific in scoring and rebounding for the year, averaging 18.4 points and 9.2 rebounds a game. She posted 6 double-doubles and scored 164 points in the Cougars’ final 8 games of the year (20.1 points/game), including a 30-point, 13-rebound effort in a 73-70 defeat to eventual national runner-up Lambuth (Tenn.) in the second round of the NAIA Tournament. Her season scoring total was the sixth-highest in Azusa Pacific women’s basketball history, and she finished with a team-high 15 double-doubles.

Hala’ufia was named NAIA All-American honorable mention, as she came in second on the team and ranked fifth in the Golden State Athletic Conference in scoring and rebounding with averages of 16.1 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. She and Moore-Porter were the only teammates to appear in the top 15 in the GSAC in both categories. Hala’ufia led Azusa Pacific to its first NAIA Tournament victory since 2006, scoring a game-high 23 points with 12 rebounds to lead the Cougars to a 65-55 first-round win over 7-time NAIA champion Southern Nazarene (Okla.).
