Robert Ruiz

Robert Ruiz begins his fourth season as an assistant to head coach Paul Svagdis, and he is in his first year with responsibilities as the associate head coach. In addition to serving as the hitting coach, Ruiz has active participation in all facets of the Cougar baseball program, including areas of recruiting, development and administration.

Ruiz was a 4-year starter at second base at Pomona-Pitzer, playing 3 seasons for Svagdis before he took the Azusa Pacific job after the 2002 season.

A 2-time All-SCIAC honoree, Ruiz earned first team honors as a 2003 senior after hitting .293 and hitting 9 home runs and leading the Sagehens to a 30-11 mark and their second straight SCIAC championship.

In 2002, he hit .285 with 10 doubles, 8 home runs, 49 runs and 31 RBIs in leading the Sagehens to a 36-7 finish and a perfect 18-0 SCIAC championship, the program’s first in more than 40 years.

As a 2001 sophomore, Ruiz was named All-SCIAC second team as well as ABCA All-West Region second team after hitting a career-high .348.

He hit .348 with a pair of doubles and a pair of home runs as a 2000 freshman.

Ruiz finished his career with a .315 average, 31 doubles, 24 home runs, 140 runs and 118 RBIs.

Ruiz graduated in 2003 with a bachelor’s in organizational studies, and he completed his Master of Arts in Organizational Leadership last spring.

Ruiz prepped at South San Francisco High, graduating in 1999. He was a 3-time all-league selection.

Ruiz is single and lives in Claremont.
